This morning when I walked into my cubicle, I noticed that my ivy plant was missing from the top of my filing cabinet. This ivy has sentimental value as it was given to me at my husband’s grandfather’s funeral. The plant was here on Friday afternoon at 4:30pm when I left the office. It is sad that you can’t even trust to leave a plant behind in your cubicle without fear of it being removed. If you have seen anything, please call me at x4041. If you took it, please return it to cubicle at 35E.45.02 on the 3^rd floor. No questions will be asked!

I believe music is everything. As illogical as it may be, I use a person’s musical taste to analyze them just as much as I would analyze a person by how much her ugly purse cost or how hard he tries to make unoriginal jokes. In the same way, I believe music characterizes a generation for future generations, and vice versa; I believe a generation characterizes its music. To name a few examples: Bob Dylan’s music was closely related to the anti-war sentiments and civil rights movements of his generation, Bruce Springsteen’s music was largely influenced by his partiality towards progressive politics as well his blue collar generation, the Beatles are the icons of the 60′s with their views on world affairs and recreational drug use (that “bugged” Elvis..ha, get it?), Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon was definitive of the 70′s thoughts on youth and consumerism, Van Halen and Depeche Mode are associated with whatever took place in the 80′s, and then of course in the 90′s you’ve got my buddy Tupac and then Nirvana and seattle grunge, which basically formed a new kind of music that now defines an entire generation. But what good music exists to define our generation?

When I talk about “our generation’s music” I’m referring to the music that was made by those in our generation, not the music that is listened to by our generation. And…i’m defining our generation as those born in the 80′s to ’95, since that was what it meant when “generation y” was first used. I’ve also heard we were called the “millenias”…? but yeah. And..i do realize that “good music” may be opinion, but I’m defining quality music as music that is still being (or will be) widely listened to fifty plus years after it was first released, and music that can be agreed by all to be creative and original in terms of lyrics and music.. For example, I would define Nirvana as being quality music because first, Kurt Cobain has been dead for over a decade and millions of people are still listening to “Lithium” or at least “Smells like Teen Spirit” every single day. Second, Nirvana invented alternative grunge, which has influenced many other bands, including Our Lady Peace, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam, who are all also pretty successful bands with good lyrics, not just words that rhyme. And, I’m pretty sure fifty years from now, Nirvana will still be known as Beatles of the 90′s music scene.

And yes i know, it hasn’t been 10 years since Plain White T’s or Daughtry or whoever have released their first album so how do we know they won’t be successful down the road? Well if you look at all quality artists, they usually attain their first big break by the time their band’s average age passes 24 (and almost all the artists/band leaders make it big before they’re 24). The Beatles did so, Nirvana did so, Frank Sinatra did so, Ray Charles did so, Bruce Springsteen did so…even Kurtis Blow and Talib Kweli. But okay the Plain White T’s for example…just happened to pop in my head. First of all, Tom Higgensen, the lead singer, could hardly be considered our generation, since he was born on 2/22/1979 but whatever. Second of all, he is ugly. Third, most people in our generation who claim to “love” their music can hardly name another song by them besides “Hey there Delilah” while anyone in our generation can name at least three Beatles songs ( I hope). And…it is kind of sad that I know more Plain white t’s songs than people who claim to love them…on both our parts. But anyway. Even hip hop has been degraded to “apple bottom jeans with the boots with fur”, when we used to listen to Tupac, the Fugees (jerseyyy), Dr. Dre, Blackalicious or even K(C)urtis Blow.

I guess the closest you can get to a good, quality artist is…Lifehouse? but that’s highly debatable since in my opinion, their albums have gotten cheesier and cheesier and less…alternative and too pop. But whatever. Jason Wade blew up in what, 2001, when he was 21? I’m bad at math but I think he qualifies for the age rule at least.

I don’t know what I”m talking about anymore. I’m just depressed because I haven’t heard a really impressive new artist in quite a while. So basically…

Our generation is supposed to be the one that changes the world, that solves all our social injustices and brings peace to all the countries our presidents have brought war to. And it may be a stretch, but how can our generation fix the world’s ills if we have yet to produce a quality artist who is able to sum up our generation’s angst into melodies that the world (not just our generation or society) will listen to?

just yeah. really. our music sucks. that is all.
